GTD, WHAAAAT!

You may be noticing all the GTD stuff I am posting. I have been a convert for years. Like any other great religion, those that practice backslide from time to time. I tend to start the year off right and slowly slip into an unorganized mess. So I always refresh by reading the book in January. I refresh twice a year to just get back on the program.

If you have not read the book Getting Things Done, just do it. If you hate books buy the audio book. I think the book though is a must. It really does reduce stress when implemented. If you are a busy professional, especially if you work as a knowledge worker. Your brain is always churning, juggling just so you don’t drop that idea or thing to do. This book helps you build a trusted system to store information. Then gives you a process to handle the information. Once your brain knows the system is trusted you tend to not fret or think about the items you are not actively needing in this moment.

I started it here

I am starting a new trend in job interviews. I would not suggest you start doing this, unless you have the goods to back it up. LOL

No suits for interviews anymore.

I have always been told, you have to wear a suit when you interview for a job. I can understand this when we were back in the Madmen days. When people wore suits getting their mail . If you were the average dude in those days, a man of distinction you wore a suit. If you went to church you wore a suite. A night on the town you wore a suit. You travelled on a plane you wore a suit, EVERYONE wore a suit.

Now when do you wear a suit? On the day you are married and the day you die. When you travel you have your best sweat pants on. If your sister is getting married she is lucky if you wear a tie. Go spend a day in a courtroom, only the attorney’s are wearing suits. The guy before the judge, 20 years ago he wore a suit, today he is wearing Fubu.

In 20 years do you think the 40 year old IT manager with 30 holes in his ears and is sporting neck tattoos is going to roll up wearing something from the Men’s Warehouse. I don’t see that happening. It will be like trying to find a president who has not inhaled.

I want to send a message to all the job hirer’s.
I want them to see me how I will look when I roll in at 7:30.

If they choose to not hire me, because I did not wear a suit. Well that is shallow thinking, while many may choose to not hire me because of this, I do not want to work for them. I am tired of working for small minded people who think diversity stops at the color of my skin or where I was born.

I do not want to be hired because of who I present myself to be, but who I am. I do not want the job because I wore a suit. LOL I once was on an interview committee. One individual decided he would not hire the college kid because his suit was baggy and he didn’t know our stock price. I was like, umm, he won’t wear the suit again since we are a company with a casual dress code. We are not hiring people to stress over and lookup our stock price, this is not a middle management position. This person who felt this way no longer works for this company, but is now a CEO of a large sized company.
I want to work for a company who choose to hire me, in spite of the fact I wore no suit. I forced them to either show me they had no clue as how to find creative, talented people or to actually try to find out if I am a creative, talented individual who would be a great fit for their company.

Why you need to allow your customers to contact you in numerous ways.

I have an account with First Premier. Today when I was trying to make a payment on one of my accounts I started getting horrible error exception messages.

Here is an example.

System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive. —> System.IO.IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. —> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

   at System.Net.Sockets.NetworkStream.Read(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 size)

   — End of inner exception stack trace —

   at System.Net.Sockets.NetworkStream.Read(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 size)

   at System.Net.PooledStream.Read(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 size)

at System.Net.Connection.SyncRead(HttpWebRequest request, Boolean userRetrievedStream, Boolean probeRead)

   — End of inner exception stack trace —

   at System.Web.Services.Protocols.WebClientProtocol.GetWebResponse(WebRequest request)

   at System.Web.Services.Protocols.HttpWebClientProtocol.GetWebResponse(WebRequest request)

   at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.Invoke(String methodName, Object[] parameters)

   at _app.cardinfoservicesBridge.GetNextPostingDateWithDate(BaseInputPacket oInputPacket) in C:\inetpub\wwwroot\FirstPremierOnlineServiceFactory\BridgeAndProxyCode.VB:line 1379

Since I currently manage and have worked in web application security in the past, i know this is not good. LOL I now know their directory structure. I know they are calling a webservice when I click to make a payment and when I try to access additional functionality that I got a similar message with. I know since they have not set their machine.config attribute to retail=true there is at least one exploit their server is vulnerable to. That with the fact I have a direct path for their directory structure….

Now I wanted to send an email to First Premier, but guess what? They only have phone numbers in their help section. I know that is a 20 minute wait. I just wanted to send a quick note saying I was attempting to do “y” and I got these errors, something is not right here. I am assuming I am one of a few hundred customers today with this issue. This issue puts their company at risk, my identity at risk and they may not know they have this exposure?

Yes if you make it easy for me to connect with you, which means your customer WILL connect with you.

Why would you not want that? Why would you not want to leverage me as someone that will say, hey you are having an issue. Thanks I love your service, help I am having this problem.

If you do not make it easy to interact with me, then that means I will ONLY interact with you when my patience has hit a boiling point. It also means I will probably as in the place of First Premier, just move on down the road. You then have lost a customer, you don’t know why. You can keep on churnings as you always have, yet wonder why your customer is growing while you are receding. maybe they have an email address on their website, listen to tweets, and engage in social media to interact with their customers.

Maybe they have a clue. Content is no longer king in a Web 2.0 world. Interaction is king. Engage me where I am at, and may it easy for me to engage you anyway I choose. This will allow you to leverage customers as assets beyond paying their bills, but making them a part of your organization looking out for you in the mean streets of the internet. LOL

What I have learned from SharkTank

The average American small business person kicks the ARSE of their british counterparts.

  1. The Dragon’s den people stutter, sweat, can’t speak and have no understanding as to how the free market works.
  2. Our sharks have real money and want to make real deals.
  3. In the American version, more people are willing to negotiate with an understanding it is better to have 10% of a real company going somewhere, than 100% of nothing.

I learned how big investors quickly calculate valuation.

I learned what are the types of ideas and how are they presented in order to create excitement in real business people.
You can learn that with hard work, it is still possible, in America to become a success. The only one stopping you is yourself.

Easy ways to dramatically increase personal productivity.

Many times in my career people have remarked on how productive I am. I have shared my tips with people I have mentored today I will share them with you. If you are diligent with little practice you will double your productivity.

1) Know your life rhythm.

Scientists call this your circadian rhythm. This is the time of day when you are at your greatest ability. I am a morning person; you may be an evening person. It is relatively easy to find your rhythm. What time of the day do you have the greatest energy? What time of the day do you step into the ‘zone’ more easily? This is your time. Once you determine when this time is guard it zealously. When I was a developer I blocked out 7:00 – 9:00 every day. I logged out of I’m, I didn’t check email. All calls went to voicemail. If someone walked to my desk for help, I would respectfully tell them I was in the middle of solving a problem and could I meet with them later. I would get so much done during this time I felt if I was doing anything other than coding I was allowing someone to steal from the company.

2) Manage distractions.

Notice I did not say avoid distractions. It is impossible to totally avoid distractions, so I do not even try. You can at best only hope to manage them. Here are numerous tips on managing them.
Have some time set aside each day to answer emails; voice mails requests for helping other people solve problems. Once you do that make sure everyone knows when these times are and stick by them. In my voicemail message, I use to state I check voice mails 3 times each day and the times I check them. This way people know what to expect from you. I also stated that if this was an emergency how they can escalate a response. Since I can automate responses I check emails much more frequently. Every hour or two. Over time people will notice they get an email response quicker and will use that method to contact you.
Since I know what my most effective work time you should also know when your least effective work time is. This is the time I keep unblocked on my calendar. This then becomes the defacto time people will tend to schedule meetings with me. Meetings are the largest monetary drain on most companies. It is sad how many billions are wasted on ineffective meetings. I want to make sure that I encourage people to use the time I am hunting for a candy bar to schedule their status meetings or decision meetings.

I also scheduled one hour each day to help others solve their problems. So while I was completing my work tasks and someone would come up for help with a problem, I would say something like. “I would love to help you with that coding issue. I am currently working on solving another problem and can help you for an hour at one o’clock”. Over time I noticed one of four things happened.

1)       They would solve the problem on their own. This is great for that person. It showed them that they also have the ability within themselves to solve their problem.

2)      They could not wait and would ask someone else. That is good too; it gave me more time and helped someone else grow.

3)      They would give up and read a paper or talk. To a neighbor. That was bad and it would be a mentoring opportunity. I a not there to do their work, and I always dislike working with people who can’t get their work done unless they have a crutch.

4)      Lastly that I would help them. With this approach I minimized the negative interruptions; I also decreased the people who accepted assistance about 20% while increasing the capabilities of my organization over time I believed.

3) Create productivity rituals.

I have over the years discovered ways to get myself back into work mode. I have found these rituals helpful in getting your mind focused back on the task at hand. My personal rituals are checking  my email, then I go to Slashdot to read a story or two. Over the years I have trained my mind to get right back into problem solving mode. I learned this technique when I worked doing cold calling.

4) Make sure your passion is what you are asked to deliver.

We spend way too much time at work to not love what we do. If you chose your career just as a framework to make money, money will probably never find you. In order to be successful, you need to be able to put in many long hours. If someone tells you there is an instant or quick way. Walk away from that person, walk down the street and buy a lottery ticket at the local market. You are far better off with that approach. It will only cost you a dollar and much less effort that the get rich quick scams. If you want to produce more, you have to be motivated. It is hard to be motivated when you do not love what you do. The work I do, I would do for free if I did not need to work.

I believe you will find success and increase your productivity if you follow these simple rules.
